What Every Dog Owner Should Know:

Welcoming a new puppy into your life is exciting, but it also comes with big responsibilities especially when it comes to their health. Vaccinations are one of the most important steps in protecting your pup from serious and sometimes fatal diseases. Let’s break down the essentials.

Core Vaccines:

  • DHPP/DAP: Protects against Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis), Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza.

  • Rabies: Required by law in most areas, protects against a fatal disease.

Non-Core Vaccines:

  • Bordetella: For "Kennel Cough," especially if around other dogs.

  • Leptospirosis (Lepto): Protects against bacterial infection from wildlife/contaminated water.

  • Canine Influenza: For both H3N8 and H3N2 strains.

  • Lyme Disease: If you live in a tick-prone area.

  • Canine influenza, also known as dog flu, is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs caused by two influenza A virus strains: H3N8 and H3N2. Most dogs lack immunity to both strains, making them highly susceptible

Typical Vaccine Schedule:

  • 6–8 Weeks: First DHPP/DAP, possibly Bordetella/Lepto/Lyme.

  • 10–12 Weeks: Second DHPP/DAP, possibly Bordetella, Lepto, Lyme, Influenza.

  • 12–16 Weeks: DHPP/DAP booster, Rabies (age dependent), Lepto/Lyme/Influenza boosters.

  • 16–20 Weeks: Final DHPP/DAP, Rabies, boosters for others.

  • 1 Year: Booster for DHPP/DAP, Rabies, and other vaccines.

IMPORTANT: Always follow your veterinarian's advice for your puppy's specific needs!

Safety Tip:

Do not let your new puppy sniff or play in areas shared by other dogs until they are fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated puppies are at risk of contracting illnesses such as Giardia and other dangerous infections.
